The Alliance for the Protection of the Mekong River plans to launch a campaign to raise the awareness and educate the people for the protection of the River and the environment around the Mekong.
According to the statement issued by the group, it plans to disseminate information through internet and postcards to the people of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand who are living along the banks of the Mekong so that they would be aware of the impacts to the River caused by developments such as the construction of hydro-electric dams.
The campaign also target to educate the leaders of the countries surrounding the Mekong to focus on the livelihood of their people, the environment, ecology and the water level of the Mekong.
Mr. Chhit Sam Ath, executive chairman of the NGO Forum, said that this campaign had kicked off in Thailand since last week, but in Cambodia the campaign will kick off in April.
Mr. Chhit Sam Ath said that the campaign also target the developers so that they can help to minimize the impacts caused by developments to the environment and ecology of the Mekong.

Mr. Tek Vannara, researcher for the NGO CEPA, said that the constructions of the hydro-electric dams are posing the greatest dangers to the environment and the ecology of the Mekong. According to his studies, there are 12 spots suitable for the constructions of the hydro-electric dams. He said that, among the 12 spots, 11 were already set for dam constructions. And among the 11 spots, two were located in Cambodia.
These dam development projects are posing the greatest dangers to the marine and bird habitats as well as the environment and ecology of the Mekong.
