Worst turnout registered in Canada election

OTTAWA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Canada registered the worst election turnout in the general election Tuesday, with only 58 eligible voters casting their ballots.

Just over 23 million Canadians were eligible to vote. Only a mere half of these made it to the polling stations, according to Elections Canada statistics.

Voter turnout in general has declined in the past two decades in Canada, from 75 percent participation in 1988 to a historic low of 61 percent in 2004. It rebounded last time in 2006 to just below 65 percent.

Voting in advance polls was down slightly too, to 1,459,253 from 1,561,039 advance voters in 2006.
