U.S. imposes sanctions on Colombian rebel envoys

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- The United States announced Tuesday to impose sanctions on eight members of Colombia's main rebel group who represent the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 11 foreign countries.

"Through their service to the FARC as international representatives and negotiators, these persons provide material support to a narco-terrorist organization," said Adam Szubin, Director of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

"These individuals work abroad to obtain recruits, support and protection for the FARC's acts of terrorism."

The accused members allegedly represent the FARC in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico and Canada.

The FARC is the largest guerrilla group in Latin America, seeking to topple the government in Bogota for four decades. It, accused of drug trafficking and holding some 750 people hostage in its jungle hideouts, is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and the Colombian government.
