COLOMBEY-LES-DEUX-EGLISES, France, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel inaugurated the Charles de Gaulle Memorial on Saturday in a move to show the continuing development of bilateral ties.
The memorial was inaugurated in Colombey Les Deux Eglises of northeastern France to commemorate late French President de Gaulle50 years after he met then German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
During the meeting in Colombey Les Deux Eglises, de Gaulle and Adenauer held long talks, which reconciled the two countries' ties strained due to World War II.
At the inauguration ceremony, Sarkozy praised de Gaulle's great contribution to the boosting of France-Germany ties. Merkel said leaders of the two countries will continue the bilateral cooperation in moving Europe forward.
The two leaders would hold talks after the inauguration to discuss bilateral ties including their joint fight against the ongoing global financial crisis.
Former French President Jacques Chirac laid the foundation for the memorial in 2006, which has an exhibition area of 1,600 square meters to display de Gaulle's lifelong experience.
