CANBERRA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- About 30 passengers and crew members were injured Tuesday afternoon after an incident of turbulence forced a Qantas Airbus to land at Learmonth Airport, near the northern West Australian town of Exmouth 1200 km from Perth.
About 15 of the passengers and cabin crew suffered serious injuries, including broken bones and lacerations, following a "sudden in-flight upset" on QF72, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said.
Most of those injured were in the rear of the aircraft, which was en route from Singapore to Perth.
Australian Associated Press quoted Sergeant Greg Lambert from West Australian Police media as saying the A330 had transmitted a Mayday alert about 1.30 pm Western Standard Time (0530 GMT).
About 300 people were on the flight, which landed safely at Learmonth.
Lambert said emergency services staff were at the airport. Exmouth hospital staff were assessing the condition of the injured passengers.
The flight departed from Singapore's Changi Airport and had been due to arrive in Perth at 2.10 pm (0610 GMT).
Earlier reports said about 40 passengers were injured.
