Singapore soldier dies after exercising

SINGAPORE, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- A Singapore national servicemancollapsed and then died in hospital after exercising on Tuesday, Defense Ministry said.

Private (PTE) Foo Wei Rong Joe, a full-time national serviceman from 4th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment, collapsed early Tuesday morning when he was doing chin-ups as well as some push-ups, which were part of the unit's daily basic exercise routine.

He was given immediate medical attention and sent to a local hospital where doctors tried to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead two hours later.

The ministry said it is investigating the incident.

In June, the ministry announced a time-out on all physical and endurance training activities for three days following the deaths of two servicemen in training within two days.
