BRUSSELS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso sent on Tuesday a message of condolences to Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen after school shootings in Finland killed 10.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the horrific shooting of students that took place in Kauhajoki today," Barroso and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn wrote in a letter to Vanhanen.
"On behalf of the European Commission, we would like to offer our sincerest condolences to you and the people of Finland," they wrote.
They extended "heartfelt sympathies" to the families of the victims, and those injured, in this appalling crime.
A masked gunman opened fire Tuesday at a school in Kauhajoki, Western Finland, killing 10 people before fatally shooting himself.
